Tamuke Shrine

The Tamuke Shrine, located in the precincts of the Kurikara Fudo Temple in Tsubata Town, is referred to as the “God of Tamuke” in the Man’yoshu (Anthology of Ancient Japanese Poetry), Vol. 17, dated 747 (Tenpyo 19), and in the Nihon Sandai Jitsuroku (The True Record of the Three Generations of Japan), a history book dated 898 (Genkei 2). In “Man’yoshu, Vol. 17”, in a long poem written by Otomo no Ikenushi in response to a parting poem presented by Otomo no Yakamochi, the poet refers to the “deity of Tamuke” as “Tamuke no Kami ni Nusamatsuri”. Including this long poem, three monuments to Ikenushi’s Manyo poetry stand in Kurikara Park at the top of Mt. The origin of Tamuke Shrine is thought to be that travelers crossing the Kurikara Pass at that time built a shrine to enshrine the deity in order to pray for their safety on the way.
